Learn more about the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and its sponsorship of Gaelic Football and Hurling, so central to national identity and commitment to communities. Description

This course provides an examination of the six classes of nutrients with strong emphasis on chronic disease prevention and improving athletic performance. Issues concerning dietary supplements, functional foods, and the ethics of food choices are also explored.

Description

This course investigates effective coaching methods from a physiologic, psychological, and administrative framework. Students will be guided through an analysis of contemporary research and critical evaluation of current practices resulting in the development of an applied personal coaching methodology. In the process this course addresses the promotion of interpersonal skills and the understanding of individual differences as they relate to effective sport coaching practice.

Description

During this course, students will have the opportunity to fully explore the importance of the Gaelic sports to both the regional and national identity. This exploration will begin with the roots of Gaelic sports and culminate with a contemporary discussion of Irish sports in today’s environment. Students will integrate their exercise science (EX) background to survey the Gaelic sports from a physiological, biomechanical, psychological and coaching framework drawing comparisons to American-based sports.

Student groups will research, develop and implement a comprehensive athlete assessment with the local Gaelic Athletic Association club. Guest speakers and participation in the Irish Sports will supplement traditional lectures.
