Your Learning Facilities in Dingle

Campus

SHU in Dingle has two campuses, both located in the center of Dingle town.

Our main campus is located in a newly refurbished building on the grounds of the old town monastery. The building is contemporary, with all essential facilities for lectures and study.

Our second campus is located in a stately, neo-Gothic building beside St. Marys Catholic church. The building is also home to the Díseart Institute of Irish Spirituality and Culture. The building houses the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, which is illuminated by the beautifully crafted Harry Clarke stained glass windows. The windows, along with the walled gardens, first laid out in 1849, have become a popular attraction for the many visitors in Dingle.

Academics

SHU in Dingle has a wide variety of course options for you to try, enabling you to strengthen your curiosity and enthusiasm for academia by being in a new environment.

Faculty at SHU in Dingle may use a different teaching style than what you find on the Sacred Heart campus, helping you gain a new perspective on your academic pursuits. You will also get to engage beyond the classroom through community projects, field learning and facilitated cultural engagement.

Students may spend a semester, or two weeks in Dingle, earning academic credit and gaining the kind of knowledge that only a study abroad experience can provide.

Short term Programs

Students must be academically engaged four days a week, giving weekends, to allow for immersion into the Dingle community and to try out some fun activities offered on the peninsula.

Students must take one three-credit course. All students who participate in this program will receive Sacred Heart University credit and grades for the term, which can be transferred. Courses will also factor into your cumulative Grade Point Average.

Semester Programs

Students must be academically engaged four days a week, usually Monday through Thursday, during most weeks, to allow for immersion into the Dingle community and weekend travel opportunities.

Students have a choice of taking four to five courses, three credits each, totaling 12-18 credits. These courses are generally a combination of major/minor specific courses and, if SHU students, foundational core and LAE courses. All students who participate in this program will receive Sacred Heart University credit and grades for the term. Courses will also factor into your cumulative Grade Point Average.

Be sure to meet with your academic adviser early on to discuss your study abroad plan, especially if you wish to come to SHU in Dingle for a semester. Good discussion points for this advising session include:

  • When is the best semester to go in terms of your academic plan?

  • Do you need specific classes for your major or minor?

  • How long do you want to be abroad? Short-term or semester?

Some departments may have specific recommendations on when you should (or should not) go depending on your majors, minors, and certificates (and a combination thereof). It is always your responsibility to meet with your Academic Advisor(s) and review your major check sheet early on to ensure that you are staying on track toward graduation.
