SHU in Dingle SCMA alum premieres Star Wars documentary at local arts festival
Sacred Heart University student Eric Patrick Cameron, who studied abroad at SHU in Dingle in Spring 2022, premiered his documentary The Space Western of the Southwest at the famous Féile na Bealtaine arts festival in Dingle on Sunday the 30th of April.
Eric has been a lifelong Star Wars fan, and as a budding filmmaker, he had fallen in love with the idea of visiting the films’ Irish shooting locations. The ability to study and make films abroad was a huge factor for Eric when deciding what college to go to, and he ultimately chose SHU for its media and production course in Dingle.
Coming to Dingle for a semester in his Junior year, Eric was able to immerse himself in the vibrant arts and culture scene of Dingle and make dozens of valuable professional connections through its local SCMA faculty.
Eric was inspired to turn the extensive footage he took documenting his once-in-a-lifetime experience in Dingle into a film about the impact filming Stars Wars had on the lives of people local to Southwest Ireland, and what it represents for people like Eric who search for adventure in lands (if not galaxies) far, far away….
Once back in America, Eric landed an incredible interview with the director of Star Wars film The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson, which is a key feature of The Space Western of the Southwest. The film also features a remarkable original score composed by SCMA student Paul Richard Keegan.
Recognizing the strength of this work, SHU in Dingle facilitated Eric’s return to Ireland to attend the world premiere of his film. As put by Eric, ‘Returning to the magical town of Dingle with the premiere of my movie will forever be a core memory of mine.’
SCMA at SHU in Dingle congratulates Eric on his graduation from Sacred Heart this May with a degree in Media Arts, on future successes to come, and many more memories to be made in his filmmaking career.
