FAQs

How does the application process work?

Interested faculty must complete a course proposal form. The SHU Dingle office and the relevant SHU Dean will then review all course proposals. Courses may be selected outright for inclusion in one of the short-term sessions. Course proposals may be returned for revision. Once a proposal is accepted, SHU Dingle will work with the faculty to start the marketing campaign.

Final determination of whether a course will run is based on final student enrollment numbers, which are available at the end of October (Winter Session) or mid-February (Summer Sessions) of the following academic year.

What does the SHU Dingle course proposal need to include?

Course proposals should:

  • Show a clear Irish‑centric focus and explain why the course belongs in Dingle.
  • Use comparative perspectives (Ireland vs. other countries).
Address whether a similar SHU or partner course exists and why a Dingle version is beneficial.
  • Demonstrate academic rigor appropriate for a two‑week format.
Identify the target student audience and explain how you will recruit them.
  • Propose field trips and guest speakers, including opportunities for experiential learning and cultural interaction.
Can I propose an interdisciplinary or cross‑listed course?

Yes. Interdisciplinary and cross‑listed courses help attract students from multiple majors.

What’s typical credit and contact time?

Short‑term courses are typically 3 credits over 7 teaching days (42 contact hours).

Who can sign up for my course if it is approved?

All short-term program courses are open to any US college or university student, unless otherwise requested by the faculty member.

How will my course be marketed?

If successful, courses must meet enrollment goals to ensure that they will run during one of the short-
term sessions.

As a faculty member, you have to make a personal commitment to get students to participate in your course. SHU Dingle, in cooperation with the SHU Office of Global Education, will assist you in marketing your course through the production of program brochures, flyers, email marketing, information sessions, and posting to relevant websites.

However, you are encouraged and expected to take a primary role in marketing your course. This can occur through class visits, targeted e-mails, departmental efforts, advising, etc.

Is this a faculty-led program?

No. SHU Dingle manages all aspects of the student experience, including travel, health, accommodation, and activities.

Faculty are also not required to organize any class‑based activities, such as field trips or guest speakers. These components are fully coordinated and facilitated by the SHU Dingle team.
